When joining a Ray of Sun Adventures event, having the right gear is key to ensuring your safety, comfort, and enjoyment. Whether you're joining us for a day hike or a multi-day adventure, being well-prepared allows you to fully embrace the experience. Below is a recommended kit list that will cover a typical 6-hour hike. For larger challenges, please refer to the specific event kit list.

Guide to what hiking kit to bring on a day hike
What to Bring on a Day Hike

Essential Hiking Kit List

For all participants—bringing the right gear ensures a safe and comfortable hike.

Waterproof Jacket & Trousers

A good waterproof layer is vital, especially in unpredictable weather. Choose a jacket and trousers that are fully waterproof (not just water-resistant) to keep you dry in heavy rain.

Walking Trousers

Lightweight and flexible walking trousers are ideal. Avoid jeans, as they retain moisture and can be uncomfortable when wet.

Walking Boots & Socks

Ensure you have well-fitted, comfortable walking boots with good ankle support. Pair them with proper walking socks designed to wick away sweat and prevent blisters.

Backpack

A 30-litre backpack is generally a good size to carry spare clothing, food, water, and other essentials. Choose one that is comfortable and adjustable.

Dry Bags

Use dry bags or a waterproof backpack cover to keep your gear dry. Even plastic bags can work in an emergency, but they may tear easily.

Warm Layers

Dress in layers so you can regulate your body temperature. A moisture-wicking base layer, a fleece or mid-layer, and an insulated jacket are recommended.

Hat & Gloves

A warm hat, gloves (preferably waterproof), and a buff or scarf help keep you warm, even in summer months when temperatures can drop at higher altitudes.

Cap & Sun Cream

On hot sunny days, a cap provides shade and sun cream helps protect against sunburn, especially at higher altitudes. It's important to have even on overcast days, as UV rays can still reach you through the clouds. Also pack some insect/midge repellent for summer hikes.

Food & Water

Bring enough food to keep your energy levels up, such as sandwiches, nuts, and energy bars. At least 1 litre of water is recommended for a standard hike, or more for longer routes.

Head Torch (for sunrise/sunset hikes)

A head torch with spare batteries is essential for low-light hikes. Mobile phone torches are not sufficient and are not permitted as a substitute.

Mobile Phone

Carry a fully charged phone in case of emergency. If you need to leave the group for any reason, please notify your guide.

Power Bank

A power bank and charging cable are highly recommended, especially for longer hikes, as cold weather and GPS use can drain your phone battery quickly.

Mini First Aid Kit

Carrying a mini personal first aid kit is also a good idea with things such as blister plasters (like Compeed), antiseptic wipes, and a few plasters/bandages can prevent small issues from becoming big problems. Don't forget to bring any necessary medication, such as inhalers, EpiPens, or pain relief, and store them in a waterproof container.

Cash / Card

Some remote places don’t take card payments, so having a small amount of cash is useful for parking, emergency food stops, or donations.

Recommended Additional Hiking Kit

In addition to the essential hiking kit list, these are some useful extras to enhance your comfort and safety.

Walking Poles

Helpful for reducing strain on your joints, particularly on steep ascents and descents.

Spare Socks

A fresh pair of socks can be a lifesaver if your feet get wet, reducing the risk of blisters and discomfort.

Extra Snacks

Quick-access energy sources like dried fruit, protein bars, or even a small bag of sweets can provide an energy boost during the hike.

Lip Balm & Moisturiser

Wind and cold can dry out lips and skin, so having lip balm or a small moisturiser is handy.

Flask

A lightweight insulated flask can be great for keeping a hot drink on colder days or even soup for lunch stops.

Electrolyte Tablets or Gels

Helps maintain hydration, particularly on warmer days or longer hikes where sweating is more intense.

Whistle

Many backpacks have a built-in whistle, but carrying one ensures you can signal for help if needed.

Sit Mat

A lightweight, waterproof mat provides comfort when stopping for breaks on damp ground.

Gaiters

Gaiters keep water, snow, and mud out of your boots, which is great if you're hiking in wet conditions or through long grass.

Hygiene & Toilet Kit

Carry hand sanitiser and tissues (or a small pack of wet wipes) for hygiene, especially when eating outdoors or if there are no toilets nearby. If you're heading into remote areas, a small toilet kit with biodegradable wipes, a trowel, and a zip-lock bag for used tissue is useful for responsible waste disposal. Remember to Leave No Trace!

What Your Mountain Leader Will Carry

As your qualified Mountain Leader, in addition to all the above, I will always carry essential safety and navigation equipment to ensure a smooth and safe experience. This includes:

  • Map & Compass – While GPS devices are great, navigation should never rely solely on technology. I will always have a map and compass and the skills to use them effectively.

  • Emergency Foil Blanket / Bivvy Bag – A lightweight foil blanket or bivvy bag for warmth in case of emergencies.

  • Duct Tape – Useful for quick fixes, whether it's broken boots, ripped clothing, or a leaking water bottle.

  • First Aid Kit – A fully stocked first aid kit designed to handle common hiking injuries, from blisters to more serious emergencies.

While I carry these essential safety items, it's still important for each hiker to bring their own personal kit to stay prepared and comfortable.

Bringing the right kit ensures that you stay safe and comfortable throughout your hike. If you have any questions about your gear, feel free to reach out before your event. We look forward to seeing you on the trails!
